NORTH CENTRAL LOOP (OR ROOF RIDE) OF VIETNAM

(Roof Ride in 6 days, 5 nights)

About Roof Ride

Motorbike Vietnam Adventure Tours recommends this spectacular 6-day Roof Ride by motorbike for experienced riders looking for a challenging and scenic journey through the mountains of northern Vietnam. The route takes you across the Hoang Lien mountain range, through remote mountain roads, ethnic minority villages, and some of the most impressive landscapes in the Northwest.

One of the highlights is Sapa, one of Vietnam’s must-see mountain destinations. Sapa itself is no longer a quiet place, especially during peak periods, but its spectacular location and surrounding mountains still make it an excellent stop for an overnight stay. This ride is ideal for riders who want to experience mountain passes, winding roads, dirt tracks, rice terraces, and remote areas of northern Vietnam.

Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo. (~250km, ~7h)

We leave Hanoi and enjoy an easy ride on sealed roads until Thu Cuc. Along this section, the countryside gradually replaces the busy city surroundings, with beautiful rice fields and traditional farming villages stretching along the route.

From Thu Cuc, we head toward Ba Khe on a quieter and less populated road, passing through increasingly mountainous scenery. The traffic becomes lighter as we move farther from Hanoi, allowing us to enjoy the countryside at a more relaxed pace.

The final section toward Nghia Lo is particularly beautiful, with winding roads, green valleys, rice fields, and surrounding mountains. After approximately 250 km and seven hours of riding, we arrive in Nghia Lo and spend the night in a local hotel.

Day 2: Nghia Lo – Than Uyen. (~140km, ~6h)

Today the riding becomes more challenging as we leave Nghia Lo and head into the mountains toward Than Uyen. The road is wild, bumpy, and remote, providing a genuine taste of adventure riding in Northwest Vietnam.

We ride through the spectacular Mu Cang Chai mountain massif, an area famous for its dramatic landscapes and enormous rice terraces. The mountains here rise to impressive heights and offer some of the most memorable scenery in northern Vietnam.

As we climb higher, the views become increasingly spectacular. From the mountain passes, we can look across deep valleys, terraced fields, and rugged peaks stretching into the distance. This is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in North Vietnam and a highlight of the Roof Ride.

Day 3: Than Uyen – Sapa. (~140km, ~3h)

The mountainous area around Than Uyen is home to several ethnic communities, including Flower H’mong and Dao people. We ride through their villages and mountain landscapes before turning toward Sapa.

The route follows high, twisting mountain roads, with spectacular views throughout the journey. For approximately the first 100 km, we ride on an easy track through the mountains, before joining a paved mountain road for the final 40 km toward Sapa.

The changing road conditions and dramatic scenery make this a particularly enjoyable day of motorbike riding in Northwest Vietnam. After approximately 140 km and three hours of riding, we reach Sapa and have time to relax and explore the town.

Day 4: Sapa – Bac Ha. (~100km, ~3h)

We leave Sapa and descend toward Lao Cai, before climbing back into the mountains toward Bac Ha. Before reaching the Bac Ha plateau, we turn onto a smaller road and follow the Chay River through a beautiful and less-travelled part of the Northwest.

If our visit falls on Tuesday, we can stop at Coc Ly Market, where local people from the surrounding mountains gather to trade, shop, and meet friends. The area is home to several ethnic minority communities, including H’mong, Phu La, Dao, and Tay people. This makes the ride a great opportunity to experience the local culture and traditional village life of northern Vietnam.

After exploring the area, we continue toward Bac Ha and spend the night in this peaceful mountain town.

Day 5: Bac Ha – Vu Linh. (~170km, ~5h)

Today we ride south toward Thac Ba Lake, gradually leaving the high mountains around Bac Ha behind. The road to Luc Yen is easy and mostly asphalted, making for a comfortable start to the day.

From Luc Yen, we leave the main road and follow a secondary route along Thac Ba Lake. The road passes through the territory of Dao and Tay communities, with beautiful views of the lake, forested hills, and traditional villages along the way.

Eventually, we reach Vu Linh, a traditional village on the shores of Thac Ba Lake. Here we stay with our friends in a traditional Thai-style stilt house. The accommodation is basic, but the warm welcome from the host family is likely to be one of the highlights of the Roof Ride. Enjoying a home-cooked meal and spending the evening with a local family provides a genuine taste of rural Vietnam and local hospitality.

Day 6: Vu Linh – Hanoi. (~180km, ~6h) End of Roof Ride.

We leave Vu Linh after breakfast and begin the final leg of our 6-day Roof Ride by motorbike. We head toward Son Duong, then continue along the foothills of the Tam Dao mountain range.

This route allows us to avoid some of the heavier traffic on the main roads while enjoying a final ride through the countryside. The landscape gradually changes as we get closer to Hanoi, with mountains and rural villages giving way to the busy outskirts of the capital.

We aim to arrive in Hanoi before 4 pm, ahead of the evening rush hour. This marks the end of our Roof Ride through Northwest Vietnam, after six days of mountain roads, remote villages, ethnic communities, dirt tracks, scenic passes, and some of the best landscapes in northern Vietnam.
